Make time for it and get it done — Becoming a UI/UX designer
I have never thought of being a UI/UX designer until I came through the PreMaster of Digital Media Program at the Centre for Digital Media.
I was about to say that product manager would on the top of my dream list, and yet I changed my mind as I came to realize that it doesn’t matter whichever path I am going to choose, what really matters is that I should make time for the goal I pick, and stick to it, then get it done.
It was a huge challenge for me since I actually studied general finance when I was in university. Considering my dedication to my university where I designed posters, ads and so many more to create visual impacts, I wanted to be a real designer though I did not receive any professional training.
It is safe to say that design or visual communication has been one of my interests, therefore, unsurprisingly, if I ever considered a u-turn, here comes the timing.
I do understand that there are things outstanding for me to learn as a system, undoubtedly, User Experience is a word we barely use. When it comes to a profession, it requires much more than I could offer.
From where I am standing, no matter what pushed me here, it is crucial to get started fearlessly. So I marked this quote down.
Make time for it and get it done.
People say that to some extent, turning interests into careers only kills passions. That is partly true. It is pathetic if you have to make a living doing things you don’t like. However, what if you do appreciate what you are doing, and most importantly that you are making differences? No one should ever feel ashamed about making money by doing something matches our values. On the contrary, we are padding the way for a better life.
My transition reminded me the time when I was studying at the University of Washington, and there is one sentence that I will never forget. It goes like this:
You don’t have to know what the destination looks like; you just have to have the courage to take the first step.
It moves me, motivates me.
I didn’t come from a professional background involving UI/UX design, so what? Do I need a master degree for that? I’d like to. I am making up my absence when my interests came to me too late.
Since I’ve made that choice, and I am heading to somewhere entirely new, but I am willing to take chances, face any consequences. There is no question gets answered without asking, thinking and hardworking. So is my dream.
A Chinese saying is as follows:
自己选的路，跪着也要走完。
It literally means, embarking on the journey of your choice even if you have to have your knees down.
Our life, will continue to be completed, whatever it takes.
